INPE Hosts the CEOS’ Annual Meeting

September 17, 2010

The Committee on Earth Observation Satellite 24th Reunion will be held on the 12-15 October in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The current CEOS chairmanship has been represented by the National Institute for the Space Research (INPE), which has been organizing the meeting to discuss on their progress and outcomes accomplished last year and to study the strategies to be adopted in the future as well.

Established in 1984, the CEOS coordinates civil spaceborne observations of the Earth as well as the Earth Observation satellite interchange data. Its board, which gathers 28 space agencies along with 20 national and international organizations, sustains the worldwide recognition as a leader of the orbital data dissemination use.

In 2004, through INPE, Brazil was the first country to adopt an open access policy to allow distribution of free Internet data of the China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite.

The satellite data interchange that had been offered by the CEOS joins efforts and allows the collection of more information regarding the deforestation studies, natural disaster forecasting, and biodiversity preservation, among other important applications in the present scenario of climate change. The more data available and satellites, the better will be the natural resources management of our planet.

Brazil took over the CEOS annual chair during the Committee Panel held on November 2009 in Phuket, Thailand. Now in Rio de Janeiro, will gather a new panel in order to define the next mandate.
