The 1st Iluma - International Workshop on "Issues on land use and land cover mapping in the Amazon using radar and optical data" will be held on May 31 and June 1 at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in São José dos Campos (SP).

Organized by the Earth Observation Coordination at INPE, the workshop is part of the activities planned for the project LUA (Land Use Change in Amazonia: Institutional Analysis and Modeling at multiple temporal and spatial scales) approved under FAPESP´s “Research Programme on Global Climate Change”. The workshop is sponsored by NSF (National Science Foundation-USA) and INCT - Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Mudanças Globais from CNPq.

The workshop objective is to discuss relevant issues involving targets of interest discrimination in mapping land cover and soil of the Amazon. Project partners, such as Embrapa and the University of Indiana, as well as guest researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University, will be attending the meeting, among others.
