CHUVA Project Outcomes Discussed at INPE

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

After two years of activities in different regions of Brazil, CHUVA project promotes the I Scientific Workshop at the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research – (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE), in São José dos Campos (SP), on May 25 and 24. The results of field campaigns, research and discussions that have been conducted by the five teams of the project will be presented.

Funded by FAPESP and coordinated by the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC-INPE), the project aims to understand different rainfall regimes in Brazil. In addition to the measures, the great infrastructure of equipment, including a next-generation radar for rainfall measurement, has been allowing the real time monitoring of precipitation during the experiments.

The scientific campaigns have been to Alcântara (MA), Fortaleza (CE), Belém (PA) and São José dos Campos (SP), whose rainfall and lightning monitoring outcomes will be presented at the event.

For the workshop were submitted 59 papers that present and discuss data collected during the campaigns on the themes: numerical modeling in high resolution, microphysics of clouds, atmospheric electricity, convective systems and nowcasting. On Friday (05/25), the project coordinators will discuss the plans for the next step of CHUVA project – called CHUVA-SUL – which will take place at Santa Maria (RS). The experiment will start between November and December this year.

The Workshop programming is on
