IAI Publishes New Organizational
Structure. Scientific Board of the
Inter-American Institute will be at INPE

Thursday, July 12, 2012

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) will soon have its management shared between Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Each country will host a part of the board, which aims to improve management capacity of the projects. The decision of creating two news boards was announced at the 20th Conference of the Parties of the IAI (CoP-20) held in June in the United States.

The General Board of IAI – now called Executive Board – has been based at the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais) headquarters since 1996 and will move to Montevideo.

Thus, in Buenos Aires will be based a Board of Scientific Policy, while in Sao Jose dos Campos will be the Board of Scientific Development. This Board has the mandate to review and integrate the scientific work of the IAI, and use the knowledge generated to adapt and develop the science of global change for future needs.

About IAI

The IAI was created during the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 to address the global changes in the Americas and promoting cooperative multinational research. There are 19 members of the IAI: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In order to improve understanding of global environmental change and its socioeconomic implications in the Americas, the IAI sends its scientific outcomes to policy makers and decision makers of the countries as a way to help it develop appropriate plans and actions to face the global change effects regionally.
